Brother Patrick Horner Memorial Scholarship

Whenever a Jasper hears the words "Lasallian," no one comes more immediately to mind than Brother Patrick Horner.  Brother Pat received the habit at 17 years old, thereby serving as a Christian Brother for 63 years. For most of those years, of course, he joyously fulfilled his vocation as a teacher, including 48 years at Manhattan. Indeed, even after his retirement from full-time teaching and his assumption of emeritus status, Brother Pat continued to teach, right up through the Spring 2025 semester. Generations of Jaspers remember his indefatigable energy, his brilliant clarity, and his rousing humor. His gift to them of his passion for literature, especially his beloved Chaucer, needs no further proof than the fact that so many Jasper alumni confirm that they can still recite, from memory, the opening of The Canterbury Tales in Middle English. Along with these decades of service to his students, Pat achieved international renown as a scholar of medieval English literature, and also served Manhattan as department chair, mentor, committee member, and interim dean. Brother Patrick's life was, simply put, one of wholehearted dedication to Manhattan, and his memory will forever inspire all who knew him.
